Water and Sanitation Project in Rural Eastern India

The Water and Sanitation Project in Rural Eastern India (WSPREI Phase II) aims to address critical challenges faced by Khas Sankdaha, a remote village in the Sundarban region of West Bengal, India, where open defecation, unsafe water sources, and poor hygiene awareness persist despite national sanitation programs. Building on the success of Phase I— funded by a Rotary Global Grant —which delivered 48 WASH units, Phase II will construct 30 additional units—each comprising an enclosed sanitation facility with a septic tank and a tubewell—benefiting 300–400 villagers across all age groups. Beyond improving health by reducing waterborne diseases, the project will empower women and girls with privacy and dignity, enhance school attendance, lower healthcare costs, and create local employment opportunities. Sustainability is ensured through active community participation, training local youth and women as “WASH Ambassadors,” and alignment with India’s Swachh Bharat Mission and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6. By fostering ownership and long-term maintenance, WSPREI Phase II strives to transform Khas Sankdaha into an open-defecation-free model village, advancing health, dignity, and sustainable rural development.
